北京大学燕京学堂Yenching Global Symposiumとは ~世界中の仲間と中国について議論する4日間~

2018年4月、北京大学大学院燕京学堂(Yenching Academy=イェンチン・アカデミー)のYenching Global Symposium(イェンチン・グローバル・シンポジウム)に、唯一の日本人として参加したKazuki Miyazakiさん。今回、世界中4000人の応募者の中から選ばれた80人の内の1人となったMiyazakiさんに、シンポジウムの概要や参加した経緯、北京での活動、学んだこと、伝えたいことなどについて聞きました！（あるところに掲載予定だったためインタビュー形式となっています）

――そもそもYenching Global Symposiumとは何ですか？
北京大学内に2014年に設立された全額奨学金修士プログラムのYenching Academyが、年に１度北京大学で開催している４日間の国際シンポジウムです。毎年、世界中から中国に関心のある30歳以下の若者(学部卒以上)が北京に招聘され、現地の学生や多様な分野の専門家などと共にその年ごとのテーマに沿って様々な活動に取り組みます。今年は、”Renaissance: China’s Journey in a Global Future”というテーマのもと、これからの国際社会における中国の役割や立場に焦点を当てて多くの議論や交流が行われました。北京への渡航費や現地での宿泊施設、食事などは全てYenching Academyによって提供されます。使用言語は英語です。
ちなみに、2019年のYenching Global Symposiumは“Wǒmen: Retelling the China Stories”というテーマで2019年3月末に3日間開催されます。
――なぜYenching Global Symposiumに参加したのですか？
日本の大学で国際関係学を専攻し、副専攻として平和学を修了した私にとって、中国は常に好奇心を刺激する存在でした。政治やビジネスなど、どの分野に関わるとしても、中国は日本と世界にとって良くも悪くも非常に重要だと思うからです。そのため学部時代は、半年間中国に留学しました。日本は中国に近いとはいえ、現地に行かなければわからないことも多いため、今回改めて中国に行って理解を深めたいと思い、参加しました。
――北京ではどのような活動をしましたか？
シンポジウム期間中の４日間は朝から夜まで多種多様な活動が行われました。例えば、基調講演では中国の元外務副大臣などから「一帯一路」や「アジアインフラ投資銀行」、「中国の国際関係」などについての話があり、パネルディスカッションでは各分野の専門家と共に、「文化」、「起業」、「経済」、「女性」、「教育」、「環境」、「保健」、「科学技術」などについての議論が行われました。その他にも、参加者がそれぞれの研究を発表する機会や中国のNGOを訪問する機会、中国文化を体験する機会、伝統音楽鑑賞会、交流会、懇親会、北京市内の観光地を訪問する機会などがありました。これらを通じて、参加者は様々な側面から中国に対する理解を深めることができました。特に面白かったのは、どの活動でも常に参加者同士が積極的に議論や交流をしていて、私も声が枯れるほど毎日ずっと誰かと活発に話していました(笑)。
――特に何を学び、何を思いましたか？
米中貿易摩擦や中国の民主主義、中国発のイノベーションと科学技術、活発な起業活動、環境問題への対策、伝統家屋のリノベーション活動など多岐にわたる事柄を学びました。
特に印象的だったのは、世界における中国の役割や能力に関して、中国人と外国人の認識の間にギャップがあったことです。外国人の側から台頭する中国を見ると、「中国は世界を変えようとしている」・「中国は世界の脅威になり得る」という議論がある一方で、「本当に中国が世界秩序を変えられると思う？」と言っていた中国人自身の純粋な疑問は、今年のテーマが「これからの国際社会における中国の役割とは」に設定された理由を象徴していました。日本も高度成長期を経て図らずもその「台頭」を警戒された時期があり、現在の中国に関する議論も多少日本の経験に似ているなと思いましたが、実際に「世界一の経済大国」になることが予想される中国がこれからどこに向かうのかは非常に興味深いです。
――最後に伝えたいことはありますか？
正直、北京に行く前はシンポジウムに参加することに「ビビって」いました。事前に配られた参加者プロフィールの至る所にあった「キラキラした」経歴で目が眩んでいたためです。しかし、シンポジウムを終えてみると、勇気を振り絞って一歩を踏み出し、全力で挑戦したことは大正解だったと確信しています。確かに、挑戦すると失敗することもあるかもしれませんが、挑戦しない限り成功することもないからです。努力も同じで、どんなに努力をしても成功するとは限りませんが、努力しない限り成功することもない(基本的には)と思います。私はいつも自分の能力よりも高いレベルで挑戦することで自らを成長させることができました。また、肩書きやそれまでの経歴に関係なく、実際に会ってみるとみんな平等で、今、そこで、何ができるのかという中身の方が重要だと学びました。そのため、常に全力で最高のパフォーマンスができるように努力しようと思いました。
今回、私は唯一の日本人参加者でしたが、このような国際的な場には日本人の存在がもっと必要とされていると思います。例えば、ある国が対中国関係を考えるときには、中国だけではなく日本などその他の国との関係も重要なためです。同じように、日本が対中国関係を考えるときには、世界との関係にも目を向ける必要があります。そのため、あなたがどの国・地域に関心があるとしても、是非これからももっと多くの日本人にこのような活動に積極的に参加して欲しいと思っています。
最後に、シンポジウムの閉会式で聞いた印象的な言葉を紹介します。
“Don’t wait for answers, JUST GO for it”
「答えを待つな、ただそれに向かって突き進め」
私たちは、それぞれ様々な形の夢や目標、アイデアなどを持っています。
それを実現するためには、答えを待つのではなくまずはとにかく挑戦することが重要かもしれません。
私はこれからも様々なことに挑戦していきます！
――YGSの選考通過に重要な要素(おまけ)
Yenching Global Symposiumの選考を通過するために、重要そうな要素を参考までに少しまとめてみました。
①中国：中国に関する興味や知識・経験、中国語能力（必須ではない）があるか
②経験：多様で、ユニークで、「すごい」と評価される経験があるか
③英語：各種英語試験で高スコアがあるか（応募するための最低点は設定されていないが、IELTS: 7.0点以上、TOEFL IBT: 100点以上、Cambridge: 180点以上、CEFR: C1以上のスコアがあることが望ましい）
④良い応募書類：各種質問に正確に、印象的に、興味深く、良い回答ができるか
⑤時間：シンポジウムの全日程の間、北京に滞在できる時間があるか
⑥「何か」：あなたを選びたいと思わせる「何か」を持っているか（情熱、根性、運、魅力、タイミング、相性、将来性、「 」など)
＊①から⑥までの要素がより多く揃っており、なおかつそれぞれのレベルがより高いと、選考に通る可能性が上がると考えられる
➡︎高いレベルの各要素を持った、中央「★」の位置にいる候補者になることが理想
➡︎そうでなくても、より中央「★」に近づくことが重要
＊成績の提出は求められないため、学業成績は直接的には選考に影響しない
＊多様性が重視されるため、国籍により選考の難易度は多少変動すると考えられる

この記事では、中国で英語を用いて修士が取れる全額奨学金プログラム=北京大学燕京学堂(Yenching Academy=イェンチン・アカデミー)の応募についてまとめています。応募に必要な情報(資格要件や応募書類)や応募に関するアドバイスを書いてあるので、Yenching Academyへの応募を考えている人はぜひ参考にしてみてください。「4. 各応募書類作成に関するアドバイス」は海外の他の大学や院などに応募しようとしている人にも多少は参考になるかと思います。また、Yenching Academyに興味があればそのライバルプログラムである清華大学のSchwarzman Scholars(シュワルツマン・スカラーズ)にも興味があるはずです。そちらについては、以下のリンクからみてみてください。

1. 応募に必要な資格
まず応募に際して、絶対に満たしていなきゃいけない条件は以下の二つです。
- 学位(学部卒以上=専攻はなんでもいい) ＊まだ学部を卒業していなくても応募できるが、入学する年の8月31日までに学位を取得できる必要
- 英語能力(英語が母語でない場合はIELTSかTOEFL IBTかCambridgeかCEFRのスコアの提出が必須。最低でも、IELTS: 7.0点以上、TOEFL IBT: 100点以上、Cambridge: 180点以上、CEFR: C1以上、TEM4: "良好"かそれ以上のレベルをパス、CET6: Overall 600点以上などのスコアがないと応募できない)
＊IELTSとTOEFL、Cambridgeのスコアに関しては、Yenching Academyにスコアが直接送付されるものしか受け付けられないので、試験を申し込む際にスコアの送付先として"Yenching Academy of Peking Univesity"を指定しなければならない。TOEFLの場合、Institution codeはC488。
＊英語で行われる学位プログラムを修了している場合はスコアの提出が免除される
上記の資格要件を満たした上で、以下の四つの「資格要件」も必要とされています。しかし、絶対に必要な上述の学位と英語能力とは異なり、以下の四つはなくても応募できるので、厳密に言うと資格要件というよりはただの応募に際して期待される能力です。
- 優秀な学業成績(Minimum GPA=足切りラインは設定されていない)
- 中国に関する学際的研究への強い興味関心
- 特筆すべき課外活動/経験や達成したこと
- リーダーシップ・ポテンシャル
また、応募に際して年齢制限はありませんが、入学する年の8月31日の時点で25歳以下である人に選考上の優先権が与えられるとされています。兵役がある国の出身者の場合は、27歳まで優先権が与えられます。しかし、実際は26歳以上の学生も一定数いるので、26歳以上だからといって選考に通らないということは必ずしもありません。より詳しくはホームページの該当欄を確認してみて下さい: http://www.yenchingacademy.org/Application
2. 応募に必要な書類
Yenching Academyのホームページに載っている応募書類は以下の通りです。これらの書類を英語で作成し、オンライン応募システムで提出することで応募が完了できます。
- Personal Statement (志望動機書: 750字以内)
- Research Proposal (研究計画書: 最長1枚)
- Curriculum Vitae (履歴書)
- Official transcript(s) (成績証明書: 原本が英語あるいは中国語でない場合は、原本のコピーと正式な英語への翻訳版を提出)
- Two letters of recommendation (推薦書: 2通)
- Diploma(s) or Certificate(s) of Enrollment (学位記あるいは在籍証明書: 原本が英語あるいは中国語でない場合は、原本のコピーと正式な英語への翻訳版を提出)

これらの応募書類に加え、Yenching Academyのパートナー大学出身者(在学生と卒業生)は、Yenching Academyのウェブサイトで応募することに加え、出身大学で行われる学内選考にも応募することが求められています。今のところ、日本でYenching Academyのパートナー大学となっているのは、早稲田大学と京都大学のみです。早稲田大学か京都大学出身者で、それぞれの学内選考を通った人は、Yenching Academyへの応募に対して大学自体から推薦書がもらえます。例えば、早稲田大学の学生が早稲田の学内選考に通過した場合は、自ら用意する2通の推薦書に加えて早稲田大学がYenching Academyに対して直接推薦書を提出するという感じになります。したがって、学内選考通過者は結果として推薦書が3通になります。これは、Yenching Academyが奨学生の選考に際してパートナー大学からの推薦を考慮したいということでやっているようですが、学内選考の通過と出身大学からの推薦書は、その候補者がYenching Academyにも合格するということを意味するものではありません(もちろん、ないよりはあったほうが良いとは思いますが)。実際、Yenching Academyには、パートナー大学以外からも非常に多くの多様な学生が集まっています。また、日本の場合を見ても、これまでに早稲田大学や京都大学の学生だけではなく、パートナー大学ではない国際基督教大学の学生も合格しています。なので、出身大学からの推薦書は「あったらラッキー」くらいに考えておけば大丈夫だと思います。また、もしもパートナー大学の出身者が学内選考に通過しなかったとしても、他のほとんどの人と同じように普通にYenching Academyのオンライン応募システムで応募することができます。パートナー大学の概要とリストは、次のリンク先にあります: http://yenchingacademy.org/partners
それぞれの応募書類を作成するにあたり、ヒントになるかなーと思ったことは「4. 各応募書類作成に関するアドバイス」にまとめてあります。
3. 応募に際して期待あるいは要求される力
この項目は、ほぼわたしの予測ですが、Yenching Academyでは必ずしもみんながみんな指導者としてのグローバルリーダーになっていくことが求められている訳ではなく、むしろ中国と世界への理解を深めつつそれぞれに適した立場から政治、経済、社会、科学など様々な分野で大きく活躍するグローバルリーダーとなっていくことが期待されていると思います。そんなYenching Academyへの応募者に特に要求されることは、「1. 応募に必要な資格」でも書いたように、以下の四つだと思われます。この四つはどれもなくても応募できるにもかかわらず、ホームページでは「資格要件: Eligibility」として挙げられています。
- 優秀な学業成績(Minimum GPA=足切りラインは設定されていない)
- 中国に関する学際的研究への強い興味関心
- 特筆すべき課外活動/経験や達成したこと
- リーダーシップ・ポテンシャル
まず、大学時代の学業成績(GPA)は確かに重視されています。応募に際してGPAの最低点が設定されておらず、どんな成績でも応募できますが、実際は「かなり良い大学のかなり良い成績」が期待されていると思います。応募者も多いので結果としてそうなっているのでしょうが、実際多くの奨学生は「かなり良い大学のかなり良い成績」を持っているように感じます。なので、応募を考えているのであれば、どんな授業でも良い成績を取れるように努力して良いGPAを獲得することが重要です。ただ、これはYenching Academyの良いところでもあると思いますが、世界的な有名大学の優秀な学業成績がなければYenching Academyに入ることができないということはありません。実際、奨学生の中には成績が良くない人(例えばGPA3.0以下) やいわゆる有名大学の出身ではない人もいます。
また、Yenching Academyは世界と中国をつなげるとともに中国の多様な側面を学んでもらうことを目的とした中国学(China Studies)の修士プログラムであることから、「中国に関する学際的研究への強い興味関心」は、応募者に要求される非常に重要な要素です。実際、政治や経済、社会などどんな分野を学ぶとしても、Yenching Academyで学ぶことは全て中国に関連している必要があります。そのため、どんなに素晴らしい応募者でも中国に関する興味関心がないのであれば、このプログラムには合わないでしょう。
そして、「特筆すべき課外活動/経験や達成したこと」と「リーダーシップ・ポテンシャル」はYenching Academyのような非常に競争的な全額奨学金プログラムに入るためにはとても重要な要素でしょう。というのも、このようなプログラムには世界中から非常に優秀で多様な応募者からの応募が多く集まるため、それぞれの応募者は「優秀な学業成績」と「中国への興味関心」に加えて、他の要素で自分を他の応募者から差別化する必要があるためです。応募者は、「特筆すべき課外活動/経験や達成したこと」や「リーダーシップ・ポテンシャル」をアピールすることで、学業にはとどまらない「優秀さ」を示すことができるでしょう。逆に言うと、「特筆すべき課外活動/経験や達成したこと」や「リーダーシップ・ポテンシャル」がない、あるいは効果的に伝えられないとYenching Academyに入ることは難しいかもしれません。そのため、もし応募を考えていて本気でYenching Scholarになりたいなら、戦略的にでも何か良い課外活動やリーダーシップ経験になることに挑戦した方がいいと思います。もしYenching Scholarにならないとしても、そのような経験はとても貴重で有意義なものになると思います。
まとめると、Yenching Academyのようなプログラムに合格するには、上で挙げた事柄とその他のいくつかの事柄が重要だと思います。ただ、重要な事柄は必ずしも以下に限られないし、またこの内のいくつかを欠いていても合格することはもちろん有り得ます。
- 優秀な学業成績
- 中国に関する学際的研究への強い興味関心
- ユニークかつ/または特筆すべき課外活動や経験、達成したこと
- リーダーシップ経験と能力
- 中国に多少なりとも関連した将来の目標や野望
- 応募書類を説得力と魅力のある良いものに仕上げる力
- 多様な人とのネットワーク
- 高いコミュニケーション能力
- 高い学力/知力
- 高い英語能力
- あなたを選びたいと思わせる何か(情熱、根性、運、魅力、タイミング、相性、将来性、「 」など)
ちなみに、中国でやるとはいえ英語のプログラムなので、中国語の能力はあれば気持ちプラスという程度で実際はほぼ関係ないと思います。
4. 各応募書類作成に関するアドバイス
各応募書類を作成するにあたり、ヒントになりそうかなーと思うことを挙げておきます。ただ、成績証明書と学位記あるいは在籍証明書、英語試験のスコアについては、書類作成に関するアドバイスがないのでここでは省略しています。
1. Personal Statement (志望動機書: 750字以内)
志望動機で特に重要なのは、「なぜYenching Academyがあなたの目指すものと重なっているのか」(Why is your goal in line with the Yenching Academy?) ということをわかりやすく説明して、選考者たちに「あなたの目標のためにはYenching Academyが必要だ」と信じこませることでしょう。このポイントが抜けていたり、あなたの目標がプログラムと重なっていないのであれば、合格することは極めて難しいでしょう。なので、どんなにめちゃくちゃ優秀な人でも、プログラムと関連性が全然なければ合格するのは難しいでしょう。なぜ「あなたの目標のためにはYenching Academyが必要だ」と信じこませることがそんなに重要なのかというと、結局このようなプログラムには多くの非常に優秀な人たちが応募します。そして、みんな「このプログラムに行きたい」と言います。だからこそ、ただ自分は行きたいという希望を伝えるだけではなく、じゃあ実際になんで自分がそこに行く必要があるのかということを説得する必要があります。また、Personal Statementを書くときは、ただ単に志望動機を書くのではなく、個人的な経歴をうまく使って志望動機にストーリー性を持たせると良いと思います。750字まで書くことができるので、過去・現在・未来についてわかりやすく大事なポイントを記述しつつ志望動機を仕上げることが重要でしょう。
2. Research Proposal (研究計画書: 最長1枚)（2020年11月16日追記）
研究計画書は、2020年12月4日締め切りの応募から新たに始まった評価項目です。そのため、わたしが応募したとき（2017年12月締め切り）には、このような応募書類はありませんでした。今年から新たに始まったということもあり、実際にこの書類がどのように利用・評価されるのかは定かではありません。しかし、これが追加された背景や意図を想像すれば、次のような点が重要になるかもしれません。
まず、わたしが2020年11月に行われたYCAの説明会でアドミッション・オフィスから聞いた話によると、そもそも研究計画書のポイントはIntroduction of your academic interests/records/planらしいです。一方、Personal StatementのポイントはIntroduction of yourself。つまり、今回、研究計画書が応募書類に加わったことで、応募者はPersonal Statementで自分自身（Life story）について説明する一方、研究計画書では自分のアカデミックな側面について説明するという役割分けがされたように思われます。なぜ研究計画書を追加で書かせることにしてまでアカデミックな側面をアピールしてほしいと思ったのかはわかりませんが、想像するに、応募者のアカデミックな部分をより重視するようになったのかもしれません。いずれにしても、YCAとしては、単純に応募者が学術的な一定程度の能力を有しているのか（＝関連の知識があるか、思考・議論ができるか等）とか、YCAに来てまじめに勉強・研究する気があるのかとか、研究分野がYCAに適しているのか等、このような点を探りたいんじゃないでしょうか。
自分のPersonalな部分とAcademicな部分を、Personal StatementとResearch Proposalで説明できるようになった今、その二つにしっかりとした相乗効果と関連性を持たせることが重要でしょう。つまり、Personal Statementで「あなたはどんな人物で、何をしてきて、今はどこにいて、これから（YCAの先に）何を達成していきたい」と伝えると同時に、Research Proposalでは「（Personal Statementに書いた内容）だからこそ、何を達成するために何を研究したい。そのためには、何などの方法で研究をしたいと考えている」みたいなように、二つのつながりを意識して書くとより説得的・効果的でしょう。逆にいうと、Personal StatementとResearch Proposalに書いている内容の関連性が薄かったり齟齬があったりすると、よくわからない弱い応募書類になってしまうでしょう。
ちなみに、研究計画書は最長1枚だけのため、そこまで深く書くことはできないかもしれません。内容に関して、2020年11月のYCA説明会でわたしが聞いたのは、「可能な限りで正直に書けばいい」ということでした。そのため、YCAのスタンスとしては、「研究分野にとどまらず、具体的な研究方法（履修したい授業、指導を受けたい教授、研究手法など）についてのアイデアなどがあれば詳しく書いてほしい」一方、それらがあまりよくわかっていない人は「可能な限りで書いてほしい」というもののように思います。
3. Curriculum Vitae (履歴書)
簡潔にわかりやすくまとめれば良いと思います。基本的には、2ページ以内にするのが良いと思います。また、項目としては、リーダーシップ経験も入れておくと良いかもしれません。
4. Two letters of recommendation (推薦書: 2通)
推薦書は、多様でより地位のある人からもらえる方が、そうじゃないよりかは良いと思いますが、必ずしも推薦者の身分では選考されないと思います。自分のことをよく知っている、あるいはちゃんと話せる知り合いなどの中から、中国にあるYenching Academyのプログラムへ推薦書を書いてもらうのに適している人にお願いするのが良いと思います。推薦書を全て集めるのは、推薦者の都合もありけっこう時間がかかるので、可能な限り早く準備を始めるようにした方が良いです。
あと、推薦書は内容もとても重要だと思います。推薦者にただ「推薦書をお願いします」と投げただけでは、忙しいこともあり内容はあまりよろしくないものになってしまう可能性があります。そのため、可能であれば推薦書を書いてもらえるようお願いする際に、どのようなプログラムに応募していて、なおかつその推薦者には自分のどのような点を特に強調して示してほしいかを伝えておくと良いでしょう。それぞれの推薦者に自分の異なる強みや良い所を書いてもらうことで、自分というものをより深く多面的に示すことができ、より良い候補者となれるでしょう。例えば、Yenching Academyの場合は推薦書が二通必要なので、一通目は自分のこれまでの経験やすごさ/ユニークさについて、二通目は自分の中国に関する活動や目標、情熱などについて、などというようにうまく使い分けることで、推薦書を通してもより効果的に自分を売り込めるでしょう。
推薦書の長さ的には、短すぎず長すぎず500字程度がちょうど良いのではないでしょうか。

2020年12月4日締め切りの応募から、推薦書は"from associate professors or professors only"になったそうです。つまり、推薦書を書けるのは教授のみで、自分のときにできたような他の人（NGOや国際機関の代表、外交官など）は受け付けなくなったようです。そうなると、基本的には自分が親しいゼミか何かの教授と、それに加えて何かしらのつながりのある教授からもらうしかできなくなってしまいそうです。その場合、（著名な教授とつながりのある人を除いて）推薦書で他の応募者と差別化をするのはけっこう難しくなったような気がします。それならば、せめて質の高い推薦書を書いてもらえるようにした方がいいかもしれません。
5. 日本人は選考で有利？
Yenching Academyは中国関係のプログラムとして重要な隣国である日本の学生も必要にしているにもかかわらず、これまでのところ日本人学生が少ないという現状があります。だからといって、別に日本人の選考が有利に進む訳ではないと思います。笑 ただ、日本にとっても重要な隣国である中国で世界中の人々と学べるこのようなプログラムに日本人学生も食い込んで頑張るのは非常に重要だと思います。例えば、日本が中国外交や中国ビジネスをするとき、日本は中国だけではなく、他の国とも協力したり、交渉したりすることがあるでしょう。そのため、対中国〜をするにあたっては、中国だけではなく世界とのネットワークも重要だと思います。これはつまり、世界が対中国〜をするにあたっても、日本とのネットワークが重要だということを意味します。したがって、これまでのところYenching Academyに日本人学生が少ないというのは残念なことだと思います。
現状、Yenching Academyに日本人学生が少ない理由は主に三つあると思います。
一つ目は、そもそも文系の修士や中国あるいは中国への進学に興味のある人が少ない
二つ目は、そもそもこのようなプログラムが日本人にあまり知られておらず、応募者が少ない
三つ目は、応募したとしてもプログラムの厳しい選考を勝ち抜けない
一つ目の理由は日本人に特に特徴的で、なかなか変わらないかもしれません。一方で、三つ目の理由については、ただただ切磋琢磨するしかないと思いますが、二つ目の理由については、プログラムが知られていないだけなので、もっと色々な日本人に知られれば挑戦する人も少しは増えるかなと思います。確かに選考は厳しいですが、挑戦しないと何も始まらないし、挑戦しても何も失うものはないので、是非応募してみると良いと思います！
6. 最後に
この厳しい書類選考を通過すると、セミファイナリストとして面接に進むことになります。面接は、北京にいる場合は直接北京で行い、北京にいない場合はスカイプで行う、という風になります。そこで、北京大学の教授などと英語で面接をすることになります。面接自体は20分程度ととても短いですが、様々な質問に答えなければなりません。
でも、中国やアジア、世界に興味のある人にとっては本当に最高のプログラムだと思うので、ぜひ書類選考の先の面接や、その先のYenching Scholarとしての生活、将来の挑戦とキャリアを目指して、頑張ってください！

中国トップの全額奨学金修士プログラム 北京大学Yenching Academyとは
【北京大学大学院燕京学堂 日本向け説明会のお知らせ（2023/9/9(土)21:00-22:00）】

わたしが中国で所属している北京大学大学院燕京学堂(Yenching Academy: イェンチン・アカデミー)。以前紹介した清華大学大学院Schwarzman Scholars(シュワルツマン・スカラーズ)と同様に、Yenching Academyでもたった百数十人の枠に世界中から数千人の応募が殺到しています。まさに、北京大学Yenching Academyと清華大学Schwarzman Scholarsは中国で中国について英語で学ぶ修士プログラムとしてツートップをなしていると言えます。Yenching Academyは日本ではまだ全然知られていませんが、中国やアジアに興味があるのであれば、絶対に面白いプログラムなのですごくオススメです！そこで、日本語ではほぼ情報のないYenching Academyについてまとめます。
ちなみに、自分はYenching Academyを単純にオススメしたくて「勝手に」書いているだけなので、学校から頼まれてやっているみたいなことは一切ありません。

1. Yenching Academyの概要
Yenching Academy(イェンチン・アカデミー) とは、中国と世界への理解を深めた次世代のグローバルリーダーを養成するため、北京大学内に2014年に設立された全額奨学金修士プログラムです。基本的には英語で行われるプログラムですが、中国語ができる場合は中国語で行われる北京大学の授業を履修することもできます。
奨学生はプログラムが提供している学際的な領域から自らの関心に合った専攻を選びChina Studies(中国学)の修士号を修めます。専攻できる領域は以下の6つです：Politics and International Relations(政治学と国際関係学)、Philosophy and Religion(哲学と宗教学)、Literature and Culture(文学と文化学)、Law and Society(法律学と社会学)、History and Archeology(歴史学と考古学)、Economics and Management(経済学と経営学)。例えば、Politics and International Relations(政治学と国際関係学)を専攻として選んだとすると、China Studies(中国学)の中でPolitics and International Relations(政治学と国際関係学)について学ぶということになります。イメージ的には中国の政治と国際関係を学ぶといった感じです。他の専攻についても同様です。
Yenching Academyは、表向きには「1年間の修士プログラム」として売り出していますが、厳密に言うと「北京大学に実際に滞在しなければならない最短の期間が1年間という修士プログラム」です。つまり、1年間で卒業に必要な単位を全て取ることはできますが、プログラムの構造上、卒業に必要な修士学位審査(Thesis Defense)を1年目では受けることができないので、1年間で卒業することもできません。そのため、1年間で単位を取り終えた後は北京あるいは他の都市や国で何をしていても大丈夫ですが、それと同時に修士論文を書き終え、北京大学で直接あるいは自分のいる場所からスカイプで修士学位審査を受ける必要があります。最短で修士学位審査を受けることができるのが入学から1年半後なので、最短で修士号を取って卒業できるのも入学から1年半後となります。入学から1年半というのは「最短」なので、2年かけて卒業ということももちろんあります。そのため、「1年間の修士プログラム」という表現は非常に誤解を招きやすいものではあります。。。
また、Yenching Academyの特徴としては、学際的な教育を重視していることがあります。これは、中国は非常に多様な側面で急速に変化しているため、中国をしっかりと理解するためには学際的な教育が重要だという認識があるようです。そのため、Yenching Scholar(イェンチン奨学生)は自分の専攻の授業だけではなく、自分の専攻とは関係なくても興味のある授業などを自由に履修することができます。また、Yenching Academyでは課外活動も充実しています。例えば、Yenching Academyは年に二回の国際シンポジウム(Yenching Global SymposiumとYenching Social Innovation Forum)を開催し、世界中から多くの若い中国研究者/関係者などを招聘しているので、学外の様々な人と交流する機会にも恵まれています。また、１学期に1回の中国国内研修旅行や様々な季節行事などがあるので、奨学生は多様な側面から中国と世界について学ぶことができます。
このように、自分の認識では、Yenching Academyは、「中国を世界に理解してもらうためのプログラム=内から外」といったイメージです。実際、プログラムの資金も、中国政府や中華系の財団などによって内から外に(中国から世界に)出されることで運営されています。また、Yenching Academyでは主に北京大学などの中国の優秀な講師陣からより中国的なことが学べるので、「中国トップ大学の世界向け校」と考えてもいいかもしれません。一方で、参考までに書いておくと、Yenching Academyのライバルプログラムである清華大学Schwarzman Scholarsは、「世界が中国を理解するためのプログラム=外から内」といったイメージです。このプログラムは世界中の著名企業やビジネスマンなどの多額の寄付が外から内に(世界から中国に)投入されることで運営されています。あるいは、世界中の優秀な講師陣(アイビーリーグなど)を招いて非常に欧米的なプログラムをやっているようなので、「欧米の超トップ大学の中国校」とも言えるかもしれません。二つのプログラムのこのような違いは、それぞれの修士号にも表れています。Yenching AcademyはChina Studiesの修士号ですが、Schwarzman ScholarsはGlobal Affairsの修士号です。
ただ、どちらも中国と世界、世界と中国をつないで、相互理解、繁栄、平和に貢献するという同様の理念を持っています。そのため、学生の国籍も「意図的に」非常に多様なものにしています(中国とアメリカだけはその影響力の大きさから学生数が比較的多いです)。具体的には、2018年に入学する114人のYenching Academyの第四期生は、41カ国・106大学の人々で構成されています。内訳としては、24%がアメリカ人、22%が中国人、54%がその他の国の人々といった感じです。基本的には、毎年このくらいの比率を保っているようです。
2. プログラムのメリット
Yenching Academyには特に以下のような様々なメリットがあります。
2.1 手厚い金銭的/物理的支援
海外で修士を取ろうと思うとまず問題になるのは、お金だと思います。アメリカやイギリスで自費で大学院に行くと年間500万~1000万円近くかかると言いますし、物価の安い中国でも修士を取るとなると数百万円は必要になります。ただ、Yenching Academyは全額奨学金プログラムとして、その学生にかなり包括的な金銭的/物理的支援をしてくれます。支援で受け取れるものは以下の通りです。
1. 学費
2. 寮
3. 自分の住む場所と北京の間の往復航空券
4. 中国国内での研修旅行
5. 健康保険
6. 自由に使える生活費(月3000元)
これだけの支援があれば、お金の使い方によっては、本当に「自分では一銭も出さずに海外で修士が取れる」かもしれません！
また、学内選考に通れば、自らの研究のための旅費や、2年目の中国語の授業(外部・optional)の費用などを支援してもらうこともできます。さらに、Yenching Academyを支援する他の財団などからYenching Academyからもらう奨学金とは別に研究費などをもらえることも有り得ます。
2.2 中国で世界トップクラスの教育
Yenching Academyがある北京大学は、中国国内では清華大学と1・2を争うとともに、アジア大学ランキングでは3位、世界大学ランキングでは31位です(World University Rankings 2018 by Times Higher Education)。ちなみに、現在中国の首相である李克強氏も北京大学の出身です。その北京大学の中でも、Yenching Academyには非常に優秀な学生と講師陣が集まっています。中国の大学院の修士号は、どうしてもまだ国際的評価があまり高くないような印象がありますが、中国やアジアに関心のある人の間では有名なYenching Academyならそのような心配もいらないかもしれません。
2.3 世界中のあらゆるすごい人との友情＋ネットワーク
必ずしも勉強的に優秀な人やいわゆる欧米のトップ校出身者を「すごい人」だとは思いませんが、確かにYenching Academyのようなプログラムには単純に「すごいなー」と思わされるような人が多いと感じます。政治系・経済系・社会系・理科系など、様々な程度の様々なすごいがありますが、とにかくいろいろと「すごい」です。笑 そのような人たちと友達になることは、自分の何かしらの目標や活動にも良い刺激になると思うし、将来的には良いネットワークとしてお互いに助け合えるかもしれません。また、優秀な講師陣や豪華なゲストスピーカーなどとも良い関係が築けるかもしれません。さらに、Yenching Academyが開催する国際シンポジウム(Yenching Global SymposiumとYenching Social Innovation Forum)を通じて世界中の多くの中国研究者/関係者などと交流することもできます。あとは、卒業後にYenching Academyや北京大学の校友会の一員にもなれますね。
2.4 課外活動が充実
ある物事を理解するためには、勉強だけではなく経験も重要だと思いますが、そういった意味ではYenching Academyは勉強と経験のバランスが非常に良く取れたプログラムだと思います。
例えば、Yenching Academyが年に二回開催している国際シンポジウム(Yenching Global SymposiumとYenching Social Innovation Forum)では、世界中の多くの中国研究者/関係者などと議論や交流をすることができます。また、一学期に一回は中国国内での研修旅行があり、北京以外の都市での様々な経験も通じて中国という国を観察し理解することができます。今のところ、毎年第一学期には西安に行っているようです。また、どの学期でも、授業によってはその一貫として内容に関連する場所に学生を連れて行ってくれることもあります。例えば、中国のベンチャーに関する授業で上海や深センに行くなんてこともあります。さらに、リーダーシップ養成講座のような内部/外部のプログラムを受講させてもらえることもあります。
2.5 履修する授業を柔軟に選べる
学部でも修士でも、基本的に多くの学生は自分の専攻や所属に従って履修できる授業が多かれ少なかれ制限されると思いますが、Yenching Academyでは学際的な教育を重視しているため、履修する授業をかなり柔軟に選ぶことができます。まず、Yenching Academyは英語で行われる修士プログラムですが、中国語ができる奨学生はYenching Academy内の英語で行われる授業だけではなく、北京大学の様々な大学院の中国語で行われる授業も取ることができます。もちろん、英語で行われる北京大学の様々な大学院の授業も取ることができます。これらの場合に加え、Yenching Academy内でも、自分の専攻以外の授業も柔軟に履修することができます。例えば、私はPolitics and International Relations(政治学と国際関係学)の専攻ですが、経済方面の授業である中国の起業についての授業も履修しています。確かに、闇雲に様々な授業を取っていては、どれも一貫性のない広く浅い知識にとどまってしまいそうですが、自分がしっかりと目的を持って効果的に選択すれば、この授業履修の柔軟性はとても良いものでしょう。
2.6 柔軟に卒業までの予定を決め、最高2年まで奨学金をもらって中国に滞在できる
Yenching Academyは「1年間の全額奨学金修士プログラム」と言っていますが、実際は1年間では修士号を取れないため、多くの人が1年半あるいは2年間、Yenching Academyに滞在しています。ただ、これは逆に言うと、Yenching Academyでは奨学生が柔軟に卒業までのスケジュールを決めることができるということを意味しています。つまり、「中国についてもっと研究したい」などの積極的な理由で中国に1年以上滞在し続けることも選ぶことができます。その際に、しっかりと1年目の学業をこなしているなどの点を満たしていれば、2年目の奨学金を申請して、2年目も奨学金をもらい続けて中国に滞在することができます。金銭的支援は基本的に1年目と同等です。この奨学金と在籍期間の柔軟性もYenching Academyに特徴的なメリットです。
2.7 中国なのに2年以下で修士が取れる
本来、中国で修士を取るには2年〜3年の時間が必要とされています。しかし、そのような中国にあっても、Yenching Academy なら最短1年間の滞在で修士を取ることができます(修士号自体の取得は最短1年半)。
ちなみに、中国人の奨学生は絶対に2年間在籍しなければならないと決まっています。中国国内の他の中国人大学院生との兼ね合いで、他の国から来た奨学生とは履修要項が少し異なるためのようです。
2.8 中国や様々なトップ企業での仕事が見つけやすくなる
Yenching Academyを通じて、中国で修士を取れる点や、中国や様々なトップ企業に関連するネットワークが築ける点、一定程度中国語ができるようになる点、中国への理解が豊富になる点、中国と世界トップクラスの教育を受けられる点などから、中国での就職や各種トップ企業の仕事を見つけることが多少は容易になると考えられます。Yenching Academy自体も、中国関連では最も著名な修士プログラムの一つなので、そのプログラムを修了したという経歴は、卒業後のキャリアで武器となり得るでしょう。
実際、Yenching Academyというコミュニティには、中国や様々なトップ企業での仕事が見つけやすくなりそうなネットワークや情報が豊富にあります。
2.9 中国への理解
わかるようでわからない国・変化が早い国・色々と色々な意味ですごい国・でも世界でどんどん重要になっている国=中国を、北京にある北京大学/Yenching Academyという最高の環境で、様々な活動を通じて直に経験し、学び、理解を深めることができます。中国は上述のような国であるからこそ、実際に内部に入って学ぶことに大きな意味があると思います。
3. Yenching Academyの奨学生と環境
世界中からの数千以上の応募から選ばれただけあって、奨学生には色々な「すごい人達」が集まっているように感じます。共通点としては、各国の良い大学をかなり良い成績で卒業したような人が基本的には多いのではないでしょうか。それに加えて/あるいは、働いたことがあるのであれば、それなりに名の通った一流組織に所属していたり、そうじゃなくても、自分で何かを立ち上げたり、何かを達成したことのある人が多いと感じます。
中国で行われる修士プログラムというだけあって、基本的にみんな何かしら「中国に関連する関心や達成したい目標」があるはずです。それに向かって、奨学生はYenching Scholarとして中国にいる間や卒業後に、起業家や経営者、政治家、研究者、政府職員、国際機関職員、ビジネスマンなどとなっていくはずです。
ただ、ここでYenching Academyの特徴として特に注目すべきなのは、Yenching Academyには非常に多様な奨学生が集まっているということです。というのも、Yenching Academyのような非常に競争的な全額奨学金プログラムはいわゆる「エリートプログラム」となり、いわゆる欧米のトップ大学や一流組織の出身者が大多数を占めがちですが、Yenching Academyの奨学生の出身大学と出身組織の国とレベルは非常に多様です。例えば、現地国では有名でも国際的には知られていない大学の出身者や面白い事をしていても有名ではない組織の出身者などが多くいます。もちろん、ハーバードやオックスフォードのような欧米のトップ大学もいいのですが、人と環境の多様性という意味ではYenching Academyのように欧米のトップ大学に限らず世界中から様々な人を受け入れているのは非常に良いことだと思います。また、大学時代の成績も必ずしもかなり良い成績で卒業したような人だけに限っている訳でもなさそうです。
また、Yenching Academyは、例えば、清華大学のSchwarzman Scholarsに比べて圧倒的に「中国的なプログラム」です。まず、Yenching Academyや北京大学で受講する授業の教授や修士論文などの指導教授はほとんどが中国人です。もちろん、海外で教育を受けている中国人の教授も多いので、それぞれの教授がどれくらい中国的かということは人によります。ただ、中国で中国人からより中国的なことを学びたいと思うなら、Yenching Academyはとても良い環境でしょう。一方で、Schwarzman Scholarsは、欧米を中心とした非中国人の教授が多い非常に「欧米的なプログラム」のようです。さらに、Yenching Academyの中国人奨学生は「中国本土の大学出身者」に限定されています。つまり、中国人でも中国国外の大学出身者はYenching Academyへの応募をすることができません。確かに、Yenching Academyの中国人奨学生の多くも、短/長期留学経験や様々な海外経験などがありますが、それでもやはり「中国本土の大学出身」で「ほとんどの教育を中国で受けてきた」中国人奨学生は比較的中国的な中国人です。一方で、Schwarzman Scholarsの中国人奨学生には、欧米のトップ大学出身者や海外経験の長い中国人がとても多いので、そのような学生は比較的中国的ではない中国人になりがちです。別にどちらが良いという訳ではありませんが、これらのことから、Yenching Academyはとても中国的なプログラムとなっています。
自分がこのようなYenching Academyの環境で特に良いと思うところは、一般的に「すごい」とされる人やコトがある意味「普通」のような認識で存在していることです。というのも、多くの人が「すごい大学」を出たり、「すごい会社」で働いたり、「すごい活動」をしていたりするので、それらがある意味このようなプログラムの中では「スタンダード＝基本」になってしまっているためです。このような環境は、ある意味怖くもありますが笑、もし自分が何か高い目標を持っていてそれに本気で挑戦したいと思っているのであれば、最高のことだと思います。みんな何か高い目標や野望を持っていたり、実際に様々なことに挑戦していたりするので、そうでないことの方がむしろ浮くかもしれない環境、あるいは自分も何かに挑戦してみようと背中を押されるよう環境とも言えるかもしれません。色々なことを頑張っていると、よく日本では必ずしも良くない意味で「意識高い系」なんていう風に呼ばれたりしますが、このようなプログラムではそんな考え方が存在し得ません。だって、みんなある意味「超意識高い系」なんだから。笑 逆に、「意識低い系」なんて考え方のほうがあり得るかもしれません。笑
だから、Yenching Academyには、例えば、自分で組織を立ち上げて運営してたり、テレビに出てたり、様々な媒体で記事を書いてたり、何かすごい賞を受賞したりと、、色々な人がいるけど、すごいなーと思うだけでそれほど驚かなくなります。「まあ、あいつなんだからそういうこともあるよね」みたいな感覚です。そんな環境なら、自分ももっといろんなことに挑戦して頑張れそうじゃないですか？
4. どんな人に向いてる？
まず、「中国について何かしらの興味がある」ことが大前提です。その上で、以下のような人がYenching Academyのようなプログラムに向いていると考えられるのではないでしょうか。
1. (お金はないけど)中国で/海外で修士を取りたい人
2. 何かしらのグローバルリーダーになりたい人
3. 何か達成したい目標や野望がある人
4. 柔軟なタイムスケジュールで修士を取りたい人
5. 世界中の優秀な人と共に学びたい人
6. 世界中の様々な人とネットワークを築きたい人
7. 世界トップクラスの教育が受けたい人
8. 中国への理解を深めたい人
9. 挑戦的な環境に身を置きたい人
10. これからもっと色々なことに挑戦して達成していきたい人
5. まとめ
北京大学のYenching Academyは日本ではまだまだ知名度がないですが、中国やアジアに興味がある人にとっては最高のプログラムの一つだと思ったのでまとめてみました！奨学金などの待遇も非常に充実していますしね...笑 ただ、国際的には中国に興味のある人の間で有名になりつつあり、実際とても人気で競争的なプログラムなので、今までに日本人が三人しか入れていませんでした... いま、2018年に入学した自分ともう一人の日本人でやっと五人になりました。日本人にとっても、中国人にとっても、他の海外の学生にとっても、中国というアジアの国で行われるプログラムに重要な隣国の日本から学生がいることは非常に大切かつ有益だと思います。なので、ぜひYenching Academyのような素晴らしいプログラムで、もっと多くの日本人にも活躍してほしいなと願っています。

【Information and Tips】Application for the Schwarzman Scholars

In this article, I write on the information and tips about the application for the Schwarzman Scholars at Tsinghua University. The Schwarzman Scholars is a fully funded one-year master program in China. If you were considering applying for the program, the article would be helpful as this includes such information as eligibility, application materials, and some tips on the application. Even if you were thinking to apply for other undergraduate or graduate schools, “4. Tips for preparing the application materials” would be useful. In addition, if you were interested in the Schwarzman Scholars, you would have similar interests in the Yenching Academy of Peking University as well. So I will write about the Yenching Academy too later just as I did for the Schwarzman Scholars because the Yenching’s application deadline is not to come yet (FYI: the Yenching’s application deadline is December 7th 2018, 12:00 noon, Beijing Time).

1. Eligibility requirements
Requirements you must meet to apply for the program are three things listed below:
1. Undergraduate degree or first degree from an accredited college or university or its equivalent
* Applicants who are currently enrolled in undergraduate degree programs must be on track to successfully complete all degree requirements by August 1, 2019. Your major could be anything.
2. Age Requirement
*Candidates must be at least 18 but not yet 29 years of age as of August 1, 2019
3. English language proficiency
*If you are not a native English speaker, you must submit a score of TOEFL PBT or TOEFL IBT or IELTS. Minimum scores for each test are 600 for TOEFL PBT, 100 for TOEFL IBT, and 7.0 for IELTS, which means if you cannot get these scores, you even cannot apply for the program.
There are some descriptions about nationality, GPA, class rank, and course requisites in the Schwarzman website, but basically anyone can apply for the program with whatever situation. Application for the Schwarzman Scholars is super tiring and hard because the program requires many application materials with high quality. It is really hard...haha But, fortunately, the application for the class of 2020 seems slightly easier than before as the number of materials decreased a bit.
Required materials listed in the Schwarzman Scholars’ website are just as following. By submitting all the materials through their online application system, you can complete the application for the program.
- Statement of Purpose and Leadership (750 words)
- Current resume/CV (less than 2 pages)
- Transcripts/Academic records (If transcripts are not in English, official translations must be included)
- Three electronic letters of recommendation (At least one of these letters must come from a recommender who can comment on the specific examples of leadership described in the candidate’s application)
- Current Affairs Essay (less than 500 words=you can pick the contemporary issue which is interest of you)
- Video (up to one minute=you can introduce yourself with your own style) * Submission of a video is strongly recommended but not required
- Score of English language proficiency tests (If you are not a native English speaker, you must submit a score of TOEFL PBT or TOEFL IBT or IELTS. Minimum scores for each test are 600 for TOEFL PBT, 100 for TOEFL IBT, and 7.0 for IELTS, which means if you cannot get these scores, you even cannot apply for the program.)
Some tips for preparing these application materials are summarized in “4. Tips for preparing the application materials.”
3. Required and/or expected qualifications
This section is totally what I guess about the qualifications you better have in order to get in the Schwarzman Scholars. First of all, I guess one of the most required things by the Schwarzman Scholars is “the potential to become a global leader who is equipped with the ability to deal with the new politics and economy of the 21st century.” The new politics and economy of the 21st century is understood as a new world order appearing as China rises. In other words, the Schwarzman Scholars (students) are expected to become distinguished people in such fields as politics, economy, society, and science of the new world after they graduate from the program. That is why I feel the Schwarzman Scholars puts a great weight on the scholars’ leadership experiences and potentials. And I guess leadership experiences here are not simply like you became a leader of some organizations, but more like you founded sort of organizations or you led some initiatives to make an action and achieve something. It is actually also stated in the Schwarzman’s website that “candidates should avoid describing situations that might fall into one of the following categories, all of which are valuable learning and growth experiences, but do not give the committee a deeper understanding of the applicant's leadership characteristics over extended periods of time: (1) accomplishing a difficult but typical task assigned in the workplace (2) solving brief problems of cultural miscommunication while traveling or studying overseas (3) simply winning office in a student or community organization (It is, however, helpful, to describe the challenges faced and accomplishments achieved in office.) (4) brief situational challenges (focus instead on longer term projects and challenges.).” It is maybe tricky to distinguish leadership experiences from management experiences, but that’s important to distinguish and what the program wants is leadership experiences. Requirements for leadership experiences would be the most challenging thing for Japanese candidates as Japanese education doesn’t really put weight on leadership experiences and so Japanese people usually don’t have such experiences. If you seriously hope to apply and become a Schwarzman Scholar, it would be important and strategic to challenge something which could be your good leadership experiences. Even if you don’t become a scholar, such experiences would be valuable learning experince for you anyway.
GPA from your undergraduate/graduate schools or equivalent schools is very important too. Even though the application is open for anyone with whatever GPA (there is no minimum GPA requirement), I assume “excellent GPA from excellent universities” is expected. Although, in fact, most of the scholars seem to have “excellent GPA from excellent universities”, this is maybe not what the program intended to do, but just happened as a result of selecting candidates. Thus, if you were considering to apply for the program, of course it would be better to study hard and get as good grades as possible from whatever classes you enroll in.
In summary, the qualifications I listed above and below would be essential to get in the programs like the Schwarzman Scholars. But, the qualifications are not limited to them, and at the same time the lack of some of these qualifications doesn’t necessarily mean you cannot get in the program.
- Leadership experiences and potential
- Excellent academic records from excellent universities
- Capability to make persuasive and attractive application materials and video
- Unique and/or outstanding experiences
- Networks with a variety of people
- Excellent communication skill
- Excellent academic ability and intelligence
- Fluency in English
- “Something” which makes the admission committee want you (enthusiasm, grit, fortune, attraction, timing, future potential, “ “, etc)
Regarding the Chinese language skill, I think you don’t necessarily have to have Chinese skill because even though the program is in China, everything would be in English (but Chinese skill could be a plus if you have).
4. Tips for preparing the application materials
In this section, I want to write down some information that could be helpful in preparing the application materials.
1. Statement of Purpose and Leadership (750 words)
It’s important to briefly and clearly state the points you want to tell in this statement because you are required to write both statement of purpose and leadership experiences in the length of only 750 words. When writing the statement of purpose, you should make sure to clearly explain, “Why your goal is in line with the Schwarzman Scholars.” And you have to persuade the selection committee to believe that “you really need the Schwarzman Scholars in order to achieve your goal.” If you missed this point or your goals were just not in line with the program, it would be hard for you to get in the program. That’s why even if you were super smart and great, that wouldn’t necessarily guarantee a spot for you in the program as long as your goals and experiences have nothing to do with the program. Also, it would be effective to use personal stories to make the statement of purpose more interesting and attractive.
Regarding the leadership experiences, I believe the important point is to persuade the selection committee that “you have outstanding leadership experiences and motivation plus potential to be a future global leader.” And as I mentioned above, I guess leadership experiences here are not simply like you became a leader of some organizations, but more like you founded sort of organizations or you led some initiatives to make an action and achieve something. That’s why you should not really write about kind of experiences in which you simply completed assigned difficult tasks because that could be just taken as management experiences. The Schwarzman’s website even states that you should not write about that kind of experiences as leadership experiences. Also, the statement of leadership experiences would look even greater if that effectively matches with the recommendation letter about your leadership experiences.
2. Current resume/CV (less than 2 pages)
You should just make it simple and clear. You can also include your leadership experiences.
3. Transcripts/Academic records (If transcripts are not in English, official translations must be included)
All the transcripts must be in English. If you only have non-English versions, you need to ask official translators to translate them into English.
4. Three electronic letters of recommendation (At least one of these letters must come from a recommender who can comment on the specific examples of leadership described in the candidate’s application)
If it’s possible, it would be better to get recommendation letters from a variety of high status people. But I guess status of recommenders doesn’t necessarily affect the application too much. You should ask the ones who seem proper to be a recommender for the Schwarzman Scholars which is the program in China and they should be the ones who know you well somehow. It takes quite some time to collect all the recommendation letters because such people tend to be busy, so you should ask recommenders as soon as possible.
Also, I believe the contents of the recommendation letters matter so much. If you just ask your recommenders to write recommendation letters and leave everything up to them, the contents would be not that good because of their busy schedules or something. That is why you should explain well to them what kind of program you are applying for and what kind of points you hope them to emphasize in the recommendation letters when asking them for recommendation letters. You can be even better candidate if each recommender mentions different strong/good points of you and promotes you from all the different angles. For example, you need three recommendation letters for the Schwarzman Scholars and you can arrange like, the first one is mainly about your leadership experiences, the second one is mainly about your goal, activity, and enthusiasm regarding China, and the third one is mainly about your achievements and uniqueness. With this tactic, you can promote yourself more effectively.
And the length of the recommendation letter shouldn’t be too short or too long. I think around 500 words would be fine.
5. Current Affairs Essay (less than 500 words=you can pick the contemporary issue which is interest of you)
It seems like you can write about whatever topics you want as long as that is current affairs. Important points of this essay would be whether you have knowledge and ability to analyze current affairs well and whether you can suggest realistic solutions for that. So you can work on this essay just as you write academic paper for your classes. Given that the essay is only up to 500 words, you need to organize your argument well and make it clear, logical, and persuasive.
6. Video (up to one minute=you can introduce yourself with your own style) * Submission of a video is strongly recommended but not required
Even though the submission of a video is optional, it seems better to submit a video. This is because the Schwarzman’s website states “Submission of a video is strongly recommended but not required” and you can present yourself in a more direct way (but remember that a video could leave negative impression as well depending on how you make it).
I think the content of a video could be anything as long as it can describe who you are. Since the important point of a video is to promote yourself, the content is the most critical thing. That is why you don’t have to make a well-edited cool video. If the content (what you speak) is good, you can just use your laptop to record it and that should be totally fine.
5. Conclusion
If you passed the super competitive first selection, you would be invited to take an interview as a semi-finalist in either of Beijing, Singapore, Bangkok(?), London, or New York. And the expenses you need to go take an interview will be fully funded by the Schwarzman Scholars. In these places, high-level figures from business, politics, non-profit organizations and universities are waiting to take an interview with you directly. That would be so nervous and challenging though.haha
However, if you are interested in China, Asia, and the world, I am sure that the Schwarzman Scholars is one of the best programs so that I wish you the best with your application, interview, and life as a Schwarzman Scholar as well as future career and challenges beyond. Good luck!

What is the Schwarzman Scholars at Tsinghua University? - one of the top master programs in China

The Schwarzman Scholars is the program which receives more than 4000 applications from all over the world for 120-150 full-scholarship spots each year. Even though the program is not famous at all in Japan, if you are interested in China or Asia, that would be quite interesting and exciting for you. Although I belong to a rival program, the Yenching Academy of Peking University, I strongly recommend the Schwarzman Scholars as well!haha The application for the class of 2020 (starting at September 2019) is closing at September 27th 2018. That’s why I would like to write about the Schwarzman Scholars in this article.

1. Overview of the Schwarzman Scholars
The Schwarzman Scholars is a full-scholarship master program designed to foster new generation of global leaders who can deal with new world politics and economy of 21st century. In 2016, it was founded as the Schwarzman College at the campus of Tsinghua University by the prominent American investor, Mr. Steven A Schwarzman, who also founded the Black Stone Group and currently serves as its Chairman and CEO. Classes are taught in English and scholars can receive master's degrees of Global Affairs in one year. Global Affairs could include various kind of topics, so the scholars also decide which areas to focus on in their researches. Three choices are given as following; Public Policy, Economics and Business, and International Studies.
The notable characteristic of this program (I believe) is that the program puts a great weight on “new world politics and economy of 21st century.” That is, in other words, a new world order appearing as China rises. In that new world, the program believes that “whether in politics, business or science, the success of future leaders around the world will depend upon an understanding of China’s role in global trends.” Therefore, the Schwarzman Scholars was created to generate next leaders equipped with the ability to achieve something in the new world. The founder of the program, Mr. Schwarzman, even argues that “In the 21st century China is core culliculamu” in order to emphasize the importance of China.
That’s why I recognize the Schwarzman Scholars is “a program for the world to understand China, from outside to inside.” In fact, foreign companies or businessmen, outsiders, donate huge amount of money to this program which is inside China (=from the world to China). Or, since it seems like the Schwarzman Scholars operates as a very western style program (ex. Ivy League universities) with invited excellent teachers from all over the world, you can also understand it as “a super top western university in China.” On the other hand, the Yenching Academy of the Peking University is more like “a program for China to invite the world to understand China, from inside to outside.” The program is also financially supported by insiders such as the Chinese government or China-related foundations (=from China to the world). Since Yenching Scholars can learn something more Chinese mainly from great Chinese teachers of the Peking University, the program can be also considered as “a super top Chinese university for the world.” This difference between the Schwarzman Scholars and the Yenching Academy is clear in their master’s degrees too; master degree in the Schwarzman Scholars is Global Affairs, but master degree in the Yenching Academy is China Studies.
However, both of the programs, the Yenching Academy and the Schwarzman Scholars, share similar missions to connect China with the world and connect the world with China in order to contribute to mutual understanding, prosperity, and peace. That’s why they also try to maintain the balance of scholars’ nationalities and intentionally make it very diverse (Chinese and American scholars are much more than other countries’ scholars because of their powerful influences). For instance, 142 Schwarzman Scholars in the class of 2019 are comprised of the people from 39 countries and 97 universities. And 41% is American, 20% is Chinese, and 39% is from the rest of the world. Well, the number of American students is quite big maybe because of strong influence of the US and so many donations from the US. It seems like the Schwarzman Scholars basically sticks with this ratio.

Various benefits which Schwarzman Scholars would enjoy are just like below:
2.1 Generous financial support
Money would be the biggest problem for many of those who hope to purse master’s degrees abroad. I have heard that it would cost you around $45,000~90,000USD for a year if you attended a graduate school in the US or the UK. Even though China is relatively cheaper to live and study, you would still need so much money. However, if you can get in the Schwarzman Scholars, you would enjoy very generous and comprehensive financial support through the full-scholarship. What you can receive is listed below (but not limited to these).
- Tuition Fees
- Room and board
- Meals inside the Schwarzman College
- Travel to and from Beijing at the beginning and end of the academic year
- An in-country study tour
- Required course books and supplies
- Health insurance
- A stipend of $4,000USD for personal expenses

Given these generous supports, it could be not impossible to spend none of your money to purse master’s degrees abroad!?
2.2 World-top-class education in China
The Tsinghua University where the Schwarzman Scholars is located at is ranked the 2nd best in Asian Universities Ranking and the 30th best in the World Universities Ranking (both by the Times Higher Education) while competing with the Peking University over the title of No.1 University in China. The current president of China, Mr. Xi Jinping, also graduated from the Tsinghua University. At that great school, the Schwarzman Scholars was formed especially with the American initiative by bringing outstanding scholars and faculties together. Although I feel the international reputation on master’s degrees from Chinese graduate schools is not that good yet, the Schwarzman Scholars which is pretty famous among China and Asia watchers would blow away that kind of concerns. Also, the program seems to put a great weight on leadership trainings.
2.3 Friendships and networks with various awesome people from all over the world
I don’t necessarily consider academically smart people or people from top western universities as “awesome people”, but I must admit that there are just many impressive people in the programs like the Schwarzman Scholars. They are just so impressive somehow in their respective fields such as politics, economy, society, science, and so on. It would be stimulus for your activities and goals to have such inspiring friends and you could help each other in the future through the networks you build. It could be also possible to foster good relationships with great teachers, guest speakers (ex. Former Secretary of State of the US, managing director of IMF, etc), advisors, and donors. You can be a part of the alumni community of the Schwarzman Scholars and the Tsinghua University as well after the graduation.
2.4 Understanding on China
At the Tsinghua University in Beijing, you can directly experience, learn, and understand the country which we have difficulty in understanding well, the country which is rapidly changing, the country where various things are impressive in various senses, but the country which is becoming more and more important in the world=China. By the way, the Schwarzman College is newly designed and built for the program and equipped with all the facilities such as scholars’ rooms, classrooms, library, cafeteria, gym, and lounge. That is why, I heard, scholars could feel too comfortable to go outside and just stay inside "the special zone" (of course this depends on each scholar though).haha However, since you are in China (if you are a scholar), it would be valuable and effective to experience something more local as well to deepen your understanding on China.
2.5 Master’s degrees in a year in China
People usually need 2~3 years to finish master’s programs in China . But, the Schwarzman Scholars allows you to take master’s decrees in a year while it’s in China.
2.6 Advantages to get a job in China or at the world-class companies
The Schwarzman Scholars would make it easier for you to find a job in China or at the world-class companies because, after the completion of the program, you can get master’s degrees in China, network with top Chinese/foreign companies, speak Chinese well somehow, gain
rich understanding on China, and receive Ivy league kind of good education. The Schwarzman Scholars itself is one of the most famous and prestigious master programs regarding China so that the degree from the program must be strength in building future careers.
3. Scholars and the environment of the Schwarzman Scholars
No wonder there are a variety of awesome scholars in the Schwarzman Scholars as they are selected from over 4000 applications from all over the world. One of the common things among many scholars seems like they graduated from top western universities with very good grades. Also/or, if they have working experiences, they would have worked for famous big companies, or not maybe would have founded something or achieved something outstanding.
As the Schwarzman Scholars is the elite master program in China, each scholar basically has “the goals related to China.” In achieving their goals while and after they are in China as Schwarzman Scholars, they would become entrepreneurs, politicians, researchers, government officers, professionals in international organizations, business people, and so on.
Well, I just suppose “awesome people” are challenging various interesting things there.haha
What I really love in the environment like the Schwarzman Scholars (same to the Yenching Academy of the Peking University) is that what usually can be perceived as “someone/something awesome” could exist as “someone/something normal.” This is because so many scholars are from “great universities”, worked/work for “great companies”, and organized/organize “great activities”, which set the standard in the program very high. This kind of environment could scare me somehow.haha At the same time, I believe if you had some sort of pretty ambitious goals and really aspired to achieve them, that environment would be so valuable and beneficial. I can also say that the program has the environment where you might feel kind of left out if not having goals/ambitions or not challenging anything and where you feel so motivated to challenge something too as other people do. In Japan, Japanese people who are active and challenging many things could be called “Ishiki-Takai-Kei (意識高い系=highy motivated people)” which includes negative impression, but this kind of shitty term wouldn’t exist in the programs like the Schwarzman Scholars and the Yenching Academy. Why? Because the scholars are all somehow “Ishiki-Takai-Kei=highly motivated people.” haha Or maybe the term “Ishiki-Hikui-Kei (意識低い系=not motivated people)” rather could exist?haha
Therefore, even though I am always impressed at many awesome scholars in the Schwarzman Scholars or the Yenching Academy such as the one who runs his own business, the one who are on TV, the one who writes articles for publication, the one who win great prize, and so one, I don’t really feel surprised anymore. The feeling is like “Oh, no wonder about that because that’s him/her.” This kind of environment could make it easier for you to purse your goals and ambitions to achieve?
4. Who would be good candidates for the program?
First of all, of course you have to have some sort of interests in China. And then, those listed below could match well with the program like the Schwarzman Scholars:
- Those who want to purse master’s degrees in China or foreign countries (but maybe no money)
- Those who want to be global leaders in their respective fields
- Those who have some sort of goals and ambitions to challenge and achieve
- Those who want to complete master’s degrees in a year
- Those who want to learn together with amazing people from all over the world
- Those who want to network with various people from all over the world
- Those who want to get world-class education
- Those who want to deepen their understanding on China
- Those who want to put themselves in challenging environment
- Those who want to challenge and achieve many things
5. Conclusion
As I am a Yenching Scholar, I’m not directly connected to the Schwarzman Scholars. I wrote this article just because I believe the program is super attractive to those who are interested in China! Everything is funded too!haha I actually want to promote the programs such as the Schwarzman Scholars and the Yenching Scholars to Japanese people as well since they are not famous at all in Japan yet. In fact, there were only two Japanese scholars in the Schwarzman Scholars so far... I hope more Japanese people to join these wonderful programs and purse their goals ahead.

As I am going to attend the graduate school in China, some of my friends were surprised to hear that and asked me “why China?” This is maybe because Japanese people tend to consider only western schools like the ones in the US and the UK when studying abroad. However, I, as a person who has already studied abroad in China before and tries to see the rise of China with an objective perspective, even feel surprised that other people are surprised to see me going to a Chinese graduate school haha. Well, I just feel like “why are you surprised when I’m going to THAT China?” In fact, the number of international students in China is rapidly increasing as the power of China is also dramatically rising in recent years: now that China, not the UK, is the second most popular destination for international students in the world. Surprising?
It is true that China is still a developing power and a degree from Chinese universities has not completely gained good international reputation yet in terms of people’s impression on that. But given China’s current and future influence/power, I believe studying in China would be such a valuable and important experience.
That’s why in this article I would like to write about “Why study in China? ~Reasons and Current Situation.”
1. Why Study in China?
1.1 The rise of China in the world
The biggest reason why more and more international students recently go to China to study must be the dramatic rise of China in the world. After the World War II and Civil War in China, China was in such an unstable situation in terms of its politics, economy, and society. However, Chinese economy experienced the miraculous growth following the Reform and Opening-Up policy led by Deng Xiaoping in 1978. Chinese economy grew about 10% every year since then for almost 30 years and the China’s GDP jumped up to $8,227 billion US dollars in 2012 from $150 billion in 1978. This is like China’s GDP in 2012 is 55 times higher than the one in 1978! As a result, China’s GDP surpassed Japan’s GDP in 2010 and became the second largest economy in the world. Economic reports from various institutions also predict that United States’ GDP will be surpassed by China’s GDP by 2030, which obviously means China becomes the world largest economic power.
China dramatically increased its military budget as well just like the chart above following the great economic growth. And in 2017 China supposedly spent $228 billion US dollars for its military, which put China to No.2 in the military expenditure ranking in the world. Since the military budget of Japan was just $45.4 billion in the same year, China’s military budget was about five times more than the Japanese one. On the other hand, US used $610 billion for its military in 2017 so that China’s budget is still just about 40% of the US one.
In addition, China is going to become the second biggest contributor for United Nations’ budget from 2019-2021 as now China can provide more money than the previous second contributor, Japan. Although China is required to pay more to the UN because of its economic growth, Japan is asked to pay less than before due to its stagnant economy. It is also assumed that China would take bigger influence on the UN over time as China is expected to spend more for the UN with its still increasing economic power.
I believe there are many other things to mention regarding the rise of China, but I just stop writing about them here because there are just so many haha.
Anyway, what I would like to emphasize is that China is rapidly rising in various kind of fields and that fact is making China one of the most powerful and important countries in the world.
1.2 The increase of conflict and cooperation between China and the world
As Chinese international influence increased, international society experienced a variety of conflict and cooperation with China. As of August 2018, the trade war between the US and China is the easy example of conflict. The trade war was triggered maybe by the character of President Trump and his administration, but the fact that China developed so fast to even surpass the US cannot be ignored as a reason behind this issue. Other issues such as South and East China Sea, Taiwan, territorial dispute between China and India, human rights also exemplify conflicts between China and the world. On the other hand, China commits to many international cooperation on various topics: they are, for example, Paris agreement on climate change, One Belt One Road initiative (some countries see this as a tension), North Korean issue (some countries may disagree China is cooperating on this), BRICS, Forum on China-Africa cooperation, Shanghai Cooperation Organization, G20, ASEAN+neighboring countries cooperation, initiative to ratify free trade treaties such as RCEP, and so on. In other words, the relationship between China and the world is getting more complicated and important as China rises.
I believe it is important for us to improve existing cooperation for better mutual prosperity and use existing conflict/issue as a chance to learn each other and seek solutions for peace between us.
1.3 China is “the first ever non-western super power in recent history”
In recent history, the nations that strongly influenced/influence the world order with its dominant economic and military power were all from the west. The emergence of super power first started with the British Empire before WWII and after that its power shifted to the US and the Soviet Union in the Cold War structure. Now that the US is considered as a sole super power in the world ever since the end of the Cold War. All these super powers somehow looked similar in the sense that they are basically white and Christian dominant countries (political system in the Soviet Union was different though). However, the country that is going to possess the most powerful economy and military and become a new super power in near future, China, is completely different from previous super powers. First of all, China is an Asian country with majority Han people and many other ethnic groups. Chinese mindset is supposedly influenced by the teachings of Confucianism, Taoism, and Buddhism. Also, Chinese political economy adopts a kind of hybrid system of Communism and Capitalism, which is very rare and unique in the current world. China holds its own super long history too as the Chinese civilization.
What would the world look like if the country like China became a super power and strongly influenced the world order and political economy? What would China think and do as a super power? Or is it likely to happen that the US and China fight over hegemony as China seizes super power (Power Transition Theory)?
The country that is likely to bring big influence to the world in good and bad ways is the first ever non-western super power in recent history and most of us don’t have a good understanding on that unique and difficult country yet, China. Therefore, no matter whether you like China or don’t like China, it is critical for us, the world, to study and understand China deeper.
1.4 Improvement of Chinese education
Even though I feel the international reputation on Chinese education is not that high yet in terms of people’s impression on that, performance of Chinese universities in world universities rankings is obviously getting better. For example, according to the World Universities Ranking 2018 released by the Times Higher Education, top Chinese universities such as Peking University and Tsinghua University were respectively ranked as 27thand 30th best in the world. Since the best university in Japan, University of Tokyo, is just ranked as 46th, it seems like Chinese universities are better than Japanese ones at least in the ranking (sometime University of Tokyo has higher rank than Chinese universities, this depends on which ranking you look at). THE Asian Universities Ranking 2018 also shows that China is doing better than Japan: Peking University is the 3rd best and Tsinghua University is the 2nd best in Asia while University of Tokyo and Kyoto respectively just got 8th and 11th places...
Not only the most famous Chinese universities such as Peking University or Tsinghua University, but also other universities are gaining better international reputation. For example, according to the World Universities Ranking 2018 made by the Academic Ranking of World Universities(ARWU), 62 Chinese universities ranked in top 500, which is the second best just behind the US. And 3 universities even made it to top 100. It’s kind of sad that Japan holds only 16 universities in top 500, but at least the ranks of University of Tokyo and Kyoto are better than Chinese universities so far in this ranking.
Just as I explained above, international reputation on Chinese education is progressively improving in various World Universities Rankings regardless of the impression that degrees from Chinese universities are not that valuable yet.
1.5 The gap between China you study at western university and China you study at Chinese university
When I considered studying China more, I wondered if I should go to “world best universities in the west” like the ones in Ivy League or just go to universities in China without caring about its international reputation. Then I finally decided to attend a graduate school in China. This was because I believe there is a gap between China you study at western university and China you study at Chinese university. Well I just feel studying China in China is much more interesting and valuable based on my studying abroad experiences both in the US and China. Of course it’s also good to study China at western universities because you may be able to gain a more objective perspective on China by staying outside of that. However, I still believe (at least) Japanese people can understand China better by actually studying in China since Japanese people tend to share similar sort of ideas on China with the western countries. Even if you choose to be in China, you can always learn objective perspectives just through Internet or books. Also, classes on China would be only chance for you to learn about China in western universities. Of course you could find Chinese students or become friends with them. However, Chinese students/people in the West tend to have more international ideas so that it wouldn’t be easy for you to understand more Chinese Chinese ideas. But if you are in China, you can easily deepen your understanding on China not only through classes but also through everything in your daily life. Studying in China is so valuable just because China is so unique and different from other countries (especially western countries). As people say it is better to see once than to hear a hundred times (see is believing), if you really want to understand more real China, I would strongly recommend you to get into China and feel/learn over there instead of just hearing Chinese stories in the West.
1.6 China’s big influence on Japanese politics, economy, and society (reason for Japanese)
China always matters a lot to Japanese politics, economy, and society. For example, Japanese military budget exceeded ¥5000 billion Japanese yen (about $46 billion US dollars) for the first time in 2016 and this was without doubt affected by the rise of China and higher tension over South and East China Sea. Of course the North Korea issue affected the increase as well, but it’s assumed that China even holds a big influence over the issue which is so important to Japan. China is also an essential factor in other issues/things such as US military base issue in Okinawa, Japan’s international political and economic strategy, domestic political situation in Japan (like what kind of party and policy are supported by the public), Japan’s initiative to promote its status in the UN, historical issues, and so on.
In terms of economy, China is one of the most important trading partners to Japan. According to the statistics on trade in 2017, Japan imported the most from China: 24.4% of all imported goods to Japan came from China while the second biggest exporter to Japan, the US, only occupied 10.7%. And Japan exported almost same amount to China and the US, respectively 19.0% and 19.4%, which makes them the biggest importer from Japan. In other words, one fourth of all goods Japan buys from the world comes from China, one fifth of all goods Japan sells to the world goes to China.
Increasing number of Chinese tourists to Japan is spending so much money in Japan too. According to the Japan National Tourism Organization and the Japan Tourism Agency, in 2017 7.35 million Chinese tourists, which is top occupying 25% of all tourists, visited Japan and spent 1694.6 billion Japanese yen (about $15 billion US dollars), which is top occupying 38.4% of all the money spent by tourists.
In Japanese society, for example, there were 107000 Chinese students out of 267000 all the international students in 2017. China sends the most international students, which accounts for 40% among all the international students. Chinese residents are the most as well among all the foreign residents in Japan, occupying 30%.
Therefore, China is an extremely important country (at least) for Japan as China is deeply involved with Japanese politics, economy, and society.
1.7 The rise of Asia
Many economic predictions imply that Asian countries will play more and more important and powerful roles in world economy. According to the statistics by the World Bank, for example, nominal GDPs of Asian countries (include Australia, New Zealand, and Russia) accounted for almost 40% of the entire world GDP in 2017.
And the report by the PwC also predicted that there would be 4 Asian countries in top 5 economy by GDP (PPP) in 2030. Top 5 are China, the US, India, Japan, and Indonesia. If you look at top 30, half of the countries would be from Asia. Moreover, India is expected to surpass GDP (PPP) of the US and become the second world largest economy by 2050.
As you can see, Asian countries will be such important actors in near future world. And China is at the center of that region.
Asia is geographically vast and each country has diverse political economy systems and social situations. This is why it would be beneficial to study in China, which is the center of Asia, and interact with people from Asia as well as those interested in the region.
2. Current situation of “Study in China”
Because of many reasons to study in China as mentioned above, China is actually turning into more and more popular destination for international students in recent years. As a matter of fact, even though the number of international students in China in 2002 was only 85000, that rapidly increased to 489200 in 2017. This is 576% of increase! As a result, now that China is the second biggest country to host international students.
The rise of China as a potential super power and a popular destination to study abroad helped create some ambitious scholarship projects which aim at bringing together more brilliant people from world to China. The significant examples are the Yenching Academy of Peking University and the Schwarzman Scholars at Tsinghua University. Both of them are one year master programs in English and offer full-scholarship (ex. tuition, accommodation, life stipend, etc) to all the students. They both established in 2014, but the number of applications are dramatically increasing every year. Although the scholarship are offered to only about 110-150 people each year, now that they accept about 4000+ applications from all over the world.
There are also other scholarship programs related to China such as the Chinese government scholarship, the Baixian Institute, and the Campus Asia programs (U-Tokyo, Peking University, Waseda University...), etc.
In conclusion, studying in China is getting more and more popular in the world. However, the number of Japanese students in China is not really increasing so that I feel the presence of Japanese students in China is not that high. For example, given the size and importance of Japan, Japanese people are under-represented at the Yenching Academy and the Schwarzman Scholars (but this is not the programs' fault).

3. Conclusion
Even though I ended up writing so long, how were the background and current situation regarding “study in China?”
China is very unique and strange country in good and bad sense. I listed up the rise of China in various fields toward superpower as a reason why the number of international students in China is increasing. On the other hand, Chinese inland still holds many poor areas. In other words, China has two faces, one is as a developed country, another is as a developing country. China also adopts a hybrid system of Communism and Capitalism for its political economy where not that much information is available for general public. Well, China is strange and difficult to understand...
However, it’s also true that this kind of country is rising as dramatic as it may exceed the political and economic power of the US and if so, China would strongly influence Japan and the world. The relationship between Japan and China isn’t that stable because of various issues they clash on over time. But, China will become an extremely important country for Japan and the world no matter whether you like China or not. This is why the big projects such as the Yenching Academy or the Schwarzman Scholars kicked off recently. I believe as a Japanese that there should be more people from Japan, which really needs to understand China well as a neighboring country, to learn together and get connected with the people from China and the world and make challenging actions for better.
In the next article, I will write about the Schwarzman Scholars at the Tsinghua University, which is one of the best programs to study in China. The Schwarzman Scholars is an one year master program in China and the students receive full-scholarship.

この記事では、英語を用いて1年間で修士が取れる全額奨学金プログラム=清華大学Schwarzman Scholarsの応募についてまとめています。応募に必要な情報(資格要件や応募書類)や応募に関するアドバイスを書いてあるので、Schwarzman Scholarsへと応募を考えている人はぜひ参考にしてみてください。「4. 各応募書類作成に関するアドバイス」は海外の他の大学や院などに応募しようとしている人にも多少は参考になるかと思います。また、Schwarzman Scholarsに興味があればそのライバルプログラムである北京大学のYenching Academy(イェンチン・アカデミー)にも興味があるはずです。そちらについても、後日Schwarzman Scholarsと同じように詳細にまとめます。

1. 応募に必要な資格
まず応募に際して、絶対に満たしていなきゃいけない条件は以下の三つです。
- 学位 (学部卒以上=専攻はなんでもいい) ＊まだ学部を卒業していなくても応募できるが、2019年8月1日までに卒業できる必要
- 18歳以上〜29歳以下(2019年8月1日の時点で)
- 英語能力 (英語が母語でない場合はTOEFL PBTかTOEFL IBTかIELTSのスコアの提出が必須。最低でも、TOEFL PBT: 600点以上、TOEFL IBT: 100点以上、IELTS: 7以上のスコアがないと応募できない。) ＊学部時代に2年以上英語で教育を受けた場合や大学院以上の教育機関で2年以上英語で教育を受けた場合はスコアの提出が免除される

2. 応募に必要な書類
Schwarzman Scholarsの応募書類は量が多く、それぞれ質もかなり高いものを要求されるので、準備がかなり大変です。これ、本当にかなり大変です。笑 (でも、2020年9月締め切りの応募は、以前に比べると書類の量が減って少し楽になっています！)
Schwarzman Scholarsのホームページに載っている、応募書類は以下の通りです。これらの書類をオンライン応募システムで提出することで応募が完了できます。
- Statement of Purpose and Leadership (志望動機とリーダーシップ経験について: 750字以内)
- Current resume/CV (履歴書: ２ページ以内)
- Transcripts/Academic records (成績表: 今までに取った学部や修士のもの全てを英語で)
- Letters of recommendation (推薦書: 三通=その内一通はStatement of Purpose and Leadershipで書く自分のリーダーシップ経験についてコメントできる人から取らなきゃダメ)
- Current Affairs Essay (時事問題小論文: 500字以内=自分で選んだ時事問題について書く)
- Video (動画: 1分以内=自分の好きな形で自分を紹介できる) ＊提出を強く勧められているが、提出するかは強制ではなく選択できる
- 英語試験のスコア (TOEFL PBT: 600点以上、TOEFL IBT: 100点以上、IELTS: 7以上) ＊英語が母語じゃない人はTOEFL PBTかTOEFL IBTかIELTSのスコアの提出を要求されます。それぞれの最低点を満たしていないと応募すらできません。
それぞれの応募書類を作成するにあたり、ヒントになるかなーと思ったことは「4. 各応募書類作成に関するアドバイス」にまとめてあります。
3. 応募に際して期待あるいは要求される力
この項目は、ほぼわたしの予測ですが、Schwarzman Scholarsで特に要求されるものは「21世紀の新しい政治経済状況に対応できるそれぞれの分野のグローバルリーダーになる素質」ではないでしょうか。「21世紀の新しい政治経済状況」とは、中国が台頭した新しい世界秩序のことです。つまり、奨学生は卒業後にそのような新しい世界状況の中で政治、経済、社会、科学など様々な分野で「すごい人」になることが期待されています。そのため、Schwarzman Scholarsは選考において、特に奨学生のリーダーシップ経験/能力を重視しているように感じます。リーダーシップ経験とは、ただ単に何かの団体のリーダーをしていたということではなく、「自分で何かを立ち上げた、あるいは何かを率いて、実際に行動を起こし、何かを達成した」ということなのではないかと思います。そのため、ホームページにも書いてありますが、ただ単純に何か難しい仕事を任せられてそれをやり抜いただけでは、必ずしもリーダーシップ経験とは評価されません(マネジメント能力としては評価されるでしょうが)。あまりリーダーシップ能力というものを特に重視しないあるいは教育しない日本の普通教育を受けてきた人にとっては、Schwarzman Scholarsのリーダーシップ経験への要求がとても高いハードルになるかもしれません。そのため、もし応募を考えていて本気でSchwarzman Scholarsになりたいなら、戦略的にでも何か良いリーダーシップ経験になることに挑戦した方がいいと思います。もしSchwarzman Scholarsにならないとしても、そのような経験はとても貴重で有意義なものになると思います。
あとは、もちろん大学時代の成績(GPA)も重視されています。応募に際してGPAの最低点が設定されておらず、どんな成績でも応募できますが、実際は「かなり良い大学のかなり良い成績」が期待されていると思います。応募者も多いので結果としてそうなっているのでしょうが、実際ほとんどの奨学生は「かなり良い大学のかなり良い成績」を持っているように感じます。なので、応募を考えているのであれば、どんな授業でも良い成績を取れるように努力して良いGPAを獲得することが重要です。
まとめると、Schwarzman Scholarsのようなプログラムに合格するには、上で挙げた事柄とその他のいくつかの事柄が重要だと思います。ただ、重要な事柄は必ずしも以下に限られないし、またこの内のいくつかを欠いていても合格することはもちろん有り得ます。
- リーダーシップ経験と能力
- かなり良い大学のかなり良い成績
- 中国に多少なりとも関連した将来の目標/野望
- 応募書類やビデオを説得力と魅力のある良いものに仕上げる力
- ユニークかつ/または特筆すべき経験/成果
- 多様な人とのネットワーク
- 高いコミュニケーション能力
- 高い学力/知力
- 高い英語能力
- あなたを選びたいと思わせる何か (情熱、根性、運、魅力、タイミング、相性、将来性、「 」など)
ちなみに、中国でやるとはいえ英語のプログラムなので、中国語の能力はあれば気持ちプラスという程度で実際はほぼ関係ないと思います。
4. 各応募書類作成に関するアドバイス
各応募書類を作成するにあたり、ヒントになりそうかなーと思うことを挙げておきます。
1. Statement of Purpose and Leadership (志望動機とリーダーシップ経験について: 750字以内)
750字以内で志望動機とリーダーシップ経験の二つについてまとめる必要があるので、どちらも簡潔にわかりやすく大事なポイントを記述することが重要でしょう。志望動機で特に重要なのは、「なぜSchowarzman Scholarsがあなたの目指すものと重なっているのか」(Why is your goal in line with the Schwarzman Scholars?) ということをわかりやすく説明して、選考者たちに「あなたの目標のためにはSchwarzman Scholarsが必要だ」と信じこませることでしょう。このポイントが抜けていたり、あなたの目標がプログラムと重なっていないのであれば、合格することは極めて難しいでしょう。なので、どんなにめちゃくちゃ優秀な人でも、プログラムと関連性が全然なければ合格するのは難しいでしょう。あと、Schwarzman Scholarsはかなり欧米的なプログラムなので、個人的な来歴をうまく使って志望動機にストーリー性を持たせると良いかもしれません。
リーダーシップ経験で重要な点は、「あなたに素晴らしいリーダーシップ経験があり、なおかつ将来的にグローバルリーダーとなっていく意欲と素質がある」ということを納得させることでしょう。そして、リーダーシップ経験とは上でも書いたように、ただ単に何かの団体のリーダーをしていたということではなく、「自分で何かを立ち上げた、あるいは何かを率いて、実際に行動を起こし、何かを達成した」ということだと思います。なので、単純に何か難しい仕事を任せられてそれをやり抜いたというような、マネジメント経験とも解釈され得る経験はあまり書かないほうが賢明かもしれません。ホームページ上には、そのようなことはリーダーシップ経験として書くなとあります。あと、リーダーシップ経験の内容は推薦書で書いてもらうものと戦略的にうまくシンクロさせて、相乗効果が出るように仕上げると良いと思います。
2. Current resume/CV (履歴書: ２ページ以内)
簡潔にわかりやすくまとめれば良いと思います。項目としては、リーダーシップ経験も入れておくと良いでしょう。
3. Transcripts/Academic records (成績表: 今までに取った学部や修士のもの全てを英語で)
全て英語で取りましょう。英語がない場合は、正式な通訳に頼んで翻訳してもらう必要があります。
4. Letters of recommendation (推薦書: 三通=その内一通はStatement of Purpose and Leadershipで書く自分のリーダーシップ経験についてコメントできる人から取らなきゃダメ)
推薦書は、多様でより地位のある人からもらえる方が、そうじゃないよりかは良いと思いますが、必ずしも推薦者の身分では選考されないと思います。自分のことをよく知っている、あるいはちゃんと話せる知り合いなどの中から、中国にあるSchwarzman Scholarsのプログラムへ推薦書を書いてもらうのに適している人にお願いするのが良いと思います。推薦書を全て集めるのは、推薦者の都合もありけっこう時間がかかるので、可能な限り早く準備を始めるようにした方が良いです。
あと、推薦書は内容もとても重要だと思います。推薦者にただ「推薦書をお願いします」と投げただけでは、忙しいこともあり内容はあまりよろしくないものになってしまう可能性があります。そのため、可能であれば推薦書を書いてもらえるようお願いする際に、どのようなプログラムに応募していて、なおかつその推薦者には自分のどのような点を特に強調して示してほしいかを伝えておくと良いでしょう。それぞれの推薦者に自分の異なる強みや良い所を書いてもらうことで、自分というものをより深く多面的に示すことができ、より良い候補者となれるでしょう。例えば、Schwarzman Scholarsの場合は推薦書が三通必要なので、一通目はリーダーシップ経験について、二通目は自分の中国に関する活動や目標、情熱などについて、三通目は自分のすごさやユニークさについて、などというようにうまく使い分けることで、推薦書を通してもより効果的に自分を売り込めるでしょう。
推薦書の長さ的には、短すぎず長すぎず500字程度がちょうど良いのではないでしょうか。
5. Current Affairs Essay (時事問題小論文: 500字以内=自分で選んだ時事問題について書く)
時事問題であれば基本的には何について書いても良いようです。このエッセイのポイントは、ちゃんと今の問題を分析して論じる知識や能力があるのか、そしてその問題に対して現実的な解決策を提案できるのか、という所でしょう。なので、大学で学術的な論文を書く要領で臨めば良いと思います。ただ、500字しか与えられていないので、その中で論をうまく展開させて、わかりやすく説得力のあるものにまとめる必要があります。
6. Video (動画: 1分以内=自分の好きな形で自分を紹介できる) ＊提出を強く勧められているが、提出するかは強制ではなく選択できる
ビデオの提出は選択式ですが、基本的には提出した方が良いと思います。選考側が「強制ではないが提出を強く勧める」と言っているし、ビデオではより直接的に自分を売り込めるからです (もちろん、使い方によってはマイナスの影響を与えかねませんが)。
ビデオの内容としては、自分をうまく伝えられるものであれば本当になんでも良いと思います。あくまでも、ビデオのポイントは自分を売り込むことにあるので、大事なのはその内容です。そのため、ビデオはかっこよく編集されたプロフェッショナルなものである必要は全然ないと思います。内容が良いのであれば、ただ自分の部屋でパソコンを使って撮ったもので全然良いと思います。
5. 日本人は選考で有利？
えー、別に日本人だからといって選考が有利に進む訳ではないと思います。笑 ただ、Schwarzman Scholarsにはソフトバンク代表取締役社長の孫正義氏から多額の寄付が入っているのにもかかわらず、日本人学生が全然いないという現状があります。別にだからといって日本人枠はないと思いますが、中国関係のプログラムとしては重要な隣国である日本の学生も必要にしていると思います。例えば、欧米の国が中国外交や中国ビジネスをするとき、そのような国は中国だけではなく、日本と協力したり、交渉したりすることもあるでしょう。そのため、対中国〜をするにあたっては、中国だけではなく日本とのネットワークも重要なんだと思います。これはつまり、日本が対中国〜をするにあたって、世界とのネットワークも重要だということを意味します。したがって、このようなプログラムに日本人学生も食い込んで頑張るのは非常に重要だと思います。
現状、Schwarzman Scholarsに日本人学生が少ない理由は三つあると思います。
一つ目は、そもそも文系の修士や中国あるいは中国への進学に興味のある人が少ない
二つ目は、そもそもこのようなプログラムが日本人にあまり知られておらず、応募者が少ない
三つ目は、応募したとしてもプログラムの超高い選考基準を満たせない
一つ目の理由は日本人に特に特徴的で、なかなか変わらないかもしれません。一方で、三つ目の理由については、ただただ切磋琢磨するしかないと思いますが、二つ目の理由については、プログラムが知られていないだけなので、もっと色々な日本人に知られれば挑戦する人も少しは増えるかなと思います。確かに選考は厳しいですが、挑戦しないと何も始まらないし、挑戦しても何も失うものはないので、是非応募してみると良いと思います！
6. 最後に
この厳しい書類選考を通過して、セミファイナリストとして面接に進めるとなると、全ての資金をSchwarzman Scholarsに負担してもらって北京かシンガポールかバンコクかロンドンかニューヨークに招待してもらうことができます。そこで、世界中の様々な分野の「すごい人」(CEO、国家元首経験者、大学理事長、非営利団体役員、ジャーナリスト、その他の指導者)と、直接面接を受けることになります。色々とすごすぎますね。笑
でも、中国やアジア、世界に興味のある人にとっては本当に最高のプログラムだと思うので、ぜひ書類選考の先の面接や、その先のSchwarzman Scholarsとしての生活、将来の挑戦とキャリアを目指して、頑張ってください！
